<text>Mastodon came online in October 2016. It's a microblog, replicating many features of Twitter, with short posts and follower/followed relationships. Its major distinction from Twitter is that it is federated, meaning it has no central server, but rather a collection of servers run by volunteers. Each server administrator can set rules for accessing and using her server. Mastodon is a modification of GNU social software, which is the underlying software of other federated microblogs, such as the Independent Microblogging Service.</text>
